I-Phone and I-Pad apps for fast boats (FREE or Cheap!)

Sometimes it seems that technology changes so rapidly that it is often hard to keep up with developments. Nobody can argue that Apple has not been wildly successful with both the I-Phone and the I-Pad. By opening up their platform to independent developers, they have greatly expanded the usefulness of their products.

The world of fast boats and naval architecture is no different. The following applications are some of the ones that are all available on ITunes for download, most either free or for a nominal charge. The web links take you to the developer’s web site.

1. Gee Meter:  http://www.iwizwheel.com/Site/GeeMeter.html

Price: FREE

Did you know that your I-Phone and I-Pad contain a tiny accelerometer? This is how the device “knows” that you are tilting the screen. This nifty little application uses that information to show you the G-Force experienced every time your vessel slams (or your car brakes, or you experience on a roller coaster, for that matter).

Here on Speed Afloat, we always advocate taking G-force into account when designing high speed vessels. Every calculation and proposal France Helices makes includes this information. Now, you have the ability to see for yourself the physical impact of your speed.

2. SpeedClock: http://www.appmaker.se/index.php?m=5&s=0

Price: US$1.99

Onboard, you can see your speed on your GPS or Nav system. What about while you are standing at the dock or onshore? This neat application can give you an estimated speed using the built-in camera on your I-Phone or I-Pad. Unfortunately, speed is shown only in MPH / KPH and not in knots.

3. Sailing Speed: http://digilander.libero.it/nk75/Nicola_Camuffo_apps_support_site/Home.html

Price: US$1.99

This application will tell you your speed in knots. Though intended for sailing, it works great with power boats, too. Great if you cannot see the bridge or are located elsewhere in the ship.

4. Ship Dyn: http://digilander.libero.it/nk75/Nicola_Camuffo_apps_support_site/ShipDyn.html

Price: US$1.99

A mobile application intended for naval architects, Ship Dyn will make the calculations for Froude number, Volumetric Froude number, Admiral Coefficient, and Shallow water effect. Handy to have, wherever you may be.

5. Ship Stat: http://digilander.libero.it/nk75/Nicola_Camuffo_apps_support_site/ShipStat.html

Price: US$1.99

Another little app intended for naval architects, this mobile app makes calculations for longitudinal or transversal weight displacement, loss of stability due to a free surface, and calculation of hull form coefficients.

6. PropCalc: http://www.rothcompany.com/prod05.htm

Price: US$5.99

France Helices uses highly proprietary software in making our calculations on surface drives. However, there are many fast vessels that use outboards or I/O drives. This little calculator is a quick estimation should you break a propeller or need to change. Since it is mobile, it can be used anywhere, including the prop shop.

7. Speedometer S54: http://studeo4ios.com/

Price: FREE

This is a different speed application, but it is free and will work on boats. Speed is measured in MPH / KPH, rather than knots.

I am currently Sales and Marketing Manager, Asia / Pacific for France Helices. Created in 1977 by Paul BEZZI, FRANCE HELICES is today an international company. French marine propulsion leader, FRANCE HELICES is also one of the international leaders. Research and development are a very important part of FRANCE HELICES program, the CAD's department is equipped with the latest computer technology, using most up to date programs. Our engineers and technicians determine from the customers specifications and designs, the type of propulsion system to suit the boat's application. They can also advise on the ideal choice of power and optimum gearbox ratio to obtain the maximum thrust. There are many FRANCE HELICES' inovations and patents such as Surface Drive System (SDS) which enable boats to obtain very high speed with excellent handling capabilities and high quality Controllable Pitch Propeller systems (CPP) for both professional use and pleasure application. The constant research using cavitation tunnel testing, guarantees high efficient propeller blade shape for our customers. More than 20 000 propellers per year are manufactured by FRANCE HELICES workshops. In all sizes from small sailing boats to large fishing vessels to navy boats or mega yachts. The FRANCE HELICES workshops are equipped with modern foundries capable of casting propellers up to 3.5 tons in NiBrAl. They are also equipped with CNC milling machines and CNC lathe machines. FRANCE HELICES has four sites which cover the complete range of production. The development of FRANCE HELICES, supported by shareholders places our company as a leader in the international market and insures a constant development, worldwide, in order to be close to the end user.

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...
