Transgene Selects Atempo HyperStream Server for Block-level Deduplication of Biopharmaceutical Data

Atempo, a leading provider of cross-platform data protection and archiving solutions, today announced that biopharmaceutical company Transgene has selected and deployed Atempo’s deduplication module, Atempo HyperStream Server, to optimize its backups and storage resources, achieving outstanding deduplication results.

Transgene is a fully-integrated biopharmaceutical company with offices in the United States and France that designs and develops cutting-edge immunotherapeutic products to treat cancers and chronic infectious diseases. Due to the nature of its business, over 80 percent of Transgene employees work in research and development and production to identify new therapies to treat cancers and chronic infectious diseases. Because the company needed to protect this research data at all times, Transgene’s IT department had previously implemented Atempo Time Navigator to secure the servers hosting all high-value data.

In an effort to streamline its backups and optimize its storage resources, Transgene recently deployed Atempo HyperStream Server, a block-level data deduplication module. This solution is installed on the backup server, an HP DL 380 bi-processor quad core with 12 GB of RAM. The Atempo Time Navigator backup server running Linux protects all the production data, equivalent to over 20 VMware servers hosted on an EMC CX3 SAN with a volume of 5 TB located in Transgene’s data center, over four miles from corporate headquarters. Since implementing the deduplication module, Transgene has experienced phenomenal deduplication rates, not only optimizing the storage resources but also the bandwidth required for backups. For example, daily backups of 330 GB of research data from Transgene’s OpenText server shrink to under 500 MB after deduplication. Similarly, daily backups of 400 GB of data from their email server shrink to 1 GB after deduplication.

“After evaluating a number of deduplication and VTL solutions, we chose Atempo HyperStream Server for its reliability, its ease-of-use and its block-level deduplication capabilities,” explained Guillaume Menguy, IT Manager at Transgene. Since implementing Atempo HyperStream Server, we have experienced impressive deduplication rates reaching 600:1 and beyond.

Transgene deployed Atempo HyperStream Server in close collaboration with CHEOPS TECHNOLOGY, an Atempo Certified system integrator. CHEOPS TECHNOLOGY is a long-standing Atempo partner with deep expertise in both high-availability storage and Atempo data protection solutions. The implementation was carried out in two days.

“With overall IT budgets being constantly reduced despite fast-growing data volumes that need protection in biotechnology and other data-intensive industries, IT managers are seeing the many benefits offered by Atempo HyperStream Server,” added Fabrice de Salaberry, Vice President of Sales, EMEA & General Manager for Atempo S.A.S. “As demonstrated by Transgene, Atempo HyperStream Server and its block-level deduplication technology optimizes backup and restore performance in the data centers and at remote sites, while efficiently managing costs and resources.”

About Atempo HyperStream

Atempo HyperStream Server is a stream-oriented, optimized storage service option for Atempo Time Navigator that shortens backup windows and decreases the amount of storage required on backup devices. As machines are backed up, Atempo HyperStream Server deduplicates and compresses the data to reduce the transmitted volume to an acceptable level for low bandwidth connections. Backups that once took hours can be reduced to minutes, remote offices can share the central backup infrastructure and fewer backup tapes or less backup disk space is required.

Today's workforce is trading their cubicles and corporate desktops in favor of an any-location, any-device work style. And as digital natives make up more and more of the modern workforce, the appetite for user-friendly, cloud-based services grows. The center of work is shifting to the user and to the cloud. But managing a proliferation of SaaS, web, and mobile apps running on any number of clouds and devices is unwieldy and increases security risks. Steve Wilson, Citrix Vice President of Cloud,...
When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation. The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data e...
