Web 2.0 & Collaboration... Opportunities Ahead

The opportunities in business-to-business collaboration space

It is interesting to recall that a couple of years back when Cisco chairman and CEO John Chambers said collaboration and Web 2.0 technologies will be driving productivity for the next decade.... we all were not aware what the implications this technology would have on enterprise and businesses and how far we will be able to harness the concept of web2.0.

Today with web2.0 we also see “collaboration” technologies bringing in lot of traction and interest in the enterprise circles. In a recent Forester survey, 49% of respondents indicated that implementing a collaboration strategy was priority or critical priority for 2008.1 As part of the same survey, respondents indicated that the topic of Web 2.0 is also hot, with 24% of those surveyed indicating that implementing Web 2.0 technology is either a priority or a critical priority for 2008.

While so much of the buzz around Web 2.0 has focused on the business-to-consumer market, the greatest opportunity today for vendors is in the business-to-business collaboration space. Some Web 2.0 collaboration technologies have shown a faster-than-normal life cycle, so it is critical for vendors to take stock of the enterprise tools that have the greatest long-term potential and invest wisely in those technologies.

Forrester also estimated that the enterprise Web 2.0 collaboration market will hit $1.8 billion by 2013.

Web 2.0 collaboration technologies solve problems that enterprises have today, but most companies have not used these tools anywhere near their potential. In this current economic climate, collaboration tools can save enterprises operation costs by getting people and processes together quickly and efficiently.
